Several countries have rallied with Saudi Arabia.

Iran has accused Saudi warplanes of attacking the Iranian embassy in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen. Saudi allies in the region, such as Bahrain, have followed suit.

According to the Mehr news agency, citing an informed source at Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the reports that the Iranian ambassador had been summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry is false.

Kuwait has recalled its ambassador to Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, a significant trading partner of Iran’s, downgraded diplomatic relations.

Iran’s annual exports to Saudi Arabia are worth about $130 million a year and are mainly steel, cement and agricultural products.

Within hours of the embassy attack, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani called the violence “totally unjustified” but accused Saudi Arabia Tuesday of focusing attention on the incident to “cover its crime” of executing Nimr.

“We hope that this dispute can be settled immediately through diplomacy”, Hasan said.

But it has been modifying its stance recently, he says, bringing it more into line with the Saudis and other Gulf states.

Qatar has had troubled relations with Saudi Arabia in the past, but ties have improved in recent years, and both countries are leading backers of the Syrian rebels fighting to oust President Bashar Assad.

Meanwhile, Iraq offered to mediate to find a solution for the crisis between the two countries.

“This responsibility has been given to us and we have been active from the early moments to lessen tensions to prevent a disaster from happening that could affect the entire region”, he said.

“Our patience with the Saudis has not yet worn out”, said the analyst, Hamid Reza Taraghi, who is close to hard-line Iranian leaders.

He said: “This trend of creating tension must stop”.

The tensions between the Sunni and Shiite powers have reverberated across the Middle East and the Muslim world, complicating efforts to resolve conflicts in Syria and Yemen.

Saudi’s embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad were attacked by Iranian protesters after the kingdom executed prominent Shia cleric Nimr Al Nimr and 46 others for terrorism offences on Saturday.

Saudi officials could not immediately be reached for comment on the Iranian claims, though the kingdom’s deputy crown prince, widely thought to wield considerable power in the monarchy, said he didn’t believe war would break out with Iran.
